Day 145: Today's Happy is about Christmas family traditions. When we were little, the countdown to Christmas was a big thing in our house. My mom was amazing at building the excitement daily by doing little things like baking something fun, putting up another decoration, and organizing our family advent calendars. We had two of them: one was a chimney that had 24 boxes in it, and in each box was a note that read something like "stay up late an extra 30 minutes" or "you get to pick the Christmas special we watch today". The other was the tree pictured here. My mom made this, ornaments and all. Each decoration covers a number, 1-24. Each day beginning December 1, one kid (whose ever turn it was that day) was allowed to select one ornament to cover that day's number. There were certain ornaments that we fought over (Frosty was my favourite, and for some reason I feel like the purple dog was my big brothers though I could be wrong), and it was wildly exciting to watch the tree slowly get decorated. The final three decorations were always Santa, the baby Jesus, and the star. The chimney is long gone, and this tree is a little fragile now, but seeing it every Christmas warms my heart and brings up such wonderful memories. It makes me excited like a little kid again, and it makes me really Happy. #365happydays
